Ch. 26 Same-Sex Marriage

Same-sex, marriage is a very topical and controversial subject in today’s world.  It is the subject of great debate, both scientifically and socially.  Everyone seems to have strong and varied opinions.  A question frequently asked by many people is, “What are the similarities and differences between same-sex marriages and traditional heterosexual marriage?”
In order to get a better understanding of what people are thinking about the similarities and differences between same-sex marriages and traditional marriages, I spoke to Larry, a member of the LDS Church.  I asked, “Is there a difference between a same-sex marriage and a heterosexual one?  How might these marriages influence the development of children in how they view the roles of mothers and fathers in the home?”
Larry responded, “The world is starting to mold and interchange the individual roles of mothers and fathers.  We need to do what we can in our home to show our children that there needs to be a balance within a marriage for it to be successful.  I’m not condoning same-sex marriage, but they can still teach their children that each parent has a different role and it’s just as admirable to be a stay at home parent as it is to be out working.”
A middle aged woman outside of the Church by the name of Telisha had a differing view.  She answered, “Yes there is a difference between the two marriages, or at least there were.  Though in today’s evolving society this is not so much the case.  In a same-sex marriage the roles of mothers and fathers are still apparent causing them not to lose out on those roles so much.  If anything it will teach the children to learn to be more open minded and accepting of those who are different. Where once our society was old fashioned we are now evolving into a modern family.”
Both Larry and Telisha have quite a differing set of opinions, so who is right?
In researching this topic, Lynn D. Wardle explained in reference to heterosexual marriages, ”The axiom that stable marriages and families are essential to the survival, stability, flourishing, and happiness of the larger communities of church, state, and civil society is deeply rooted in and throughout millennia of Western thought (2012, p.279).”
This means that with the definition of family and marriage is continually being altered in society.  As a result, instability is beginning to creep into marriages and relationships.  With this instability will come difficulty in raising children in a stable and healthy home.
